The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a dramatically simplified three-step process for filing annual tax returns, transforming what was once a cumbersome compliance ordeal into a nearly effortless digital interaction for salaried Kenyans.

From Eight Steps to Three
Effective immediately on the iTax platform, employed individuals can complete their annual returns by simply logging in with their KRA PIN or National ID card, navigating to the 'Returns' section to select the newly streamlined employment income option, and then confirming the automatically populated tax computation—whether it reflects a tax liability or a refund due. The final step is to download the receipt as proof of filing. This represents a significant departure from the eight-step process announced earlier this year, which required manual confirmation of gross income, PAYE deductions, and numerous other data points.
The new system is part of a broader strategic pivot by KRA towards what Commissioner-General Humphrey Wattanga has described as "data-driven administration," where integrated government systems pre-populate taxpayer information, eliminating manual entry and reducing the risk of errors that could lead to penalties. The tax authority has made it clear that the risk of penalties for filing errors or omissions is now significantly reduced.

Strategic Reforms Yield Record Results
The simplified filing process comes on the heels of a remarkable revenue performance by the authority. KRA surpassed the Sh2 trillion mark in cumulative revenue collection by the close of the third quarter of Financial Year 2025/26, collecting Sh2.038 trillion as of March 31, 2026, representing an 11.4 per cent growth compared to the corresponding period in the previous financial year.
Speaking on the performance, outgoing KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga noted that the upward trajectory from Sh1.829 trillion collected over the same period in FY 2024/25 signals resilience in both the economy and revenue mobilization. "Revenue collection maintained steady quarter-on-quarter growth across all three quarters, indicating improving compliance consistency and gradual strengthening in economic activity," Wattanga said.
The Digital-First Future
The three-step process is the latest in a series of digital enhancements aimed at making tax compliance seamless. KRA has already implemented pre-populated returns for employment income and nil filers, reducing the need for manual data entry. The authority has also introduced an Automated Payment Plan mechanism, allowing eligible taxpayers to settle confirmed tax liabilities in installments of up to six months.

Looking ahead, effective January 1, 2026, KRA will begin validating all income and expenses declared in tax returns against electronic tax invoices (TIMS/eTIMS), withholding tax records, and customs import data, flagging any mismatches in real time. This automated validation framework is part of a wider government plan to embed Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in tax administration, with the goal of raising Kenya's tax-to-GDP ratio from the current 14 per cent to 22 per cent within seven years.

Deadline Approaching
The simplified filing process arrives just as the timeline for filing annual income tax returns fast approaches. Taxpayers who fail to file by the June 30 deadline face automatic penalties: a late filing penalty of 5 per cent of the tax due or Ksh2,000, whichever is higher, plus a late payment penalty of 5 per cent of the unpaid tax and 1 per cent interest every month until it is paid. KRA has encouraged all Kenyans to take advantage of the new streamlined system to comply early and avoid last-minute rushes.
The Bottom Line
For millions of salaried Kenyans, tax filing has been transformed from a dreaded annual ritual requiring spreadsheets and calculators into a three-click confirmation process. As one analyst put it: if filing your taxes used to feel like solving a puzzle, now it feels like checking your phone.
