In a bid to curb the rising toll of road accidents during one of the busiest travel seasons in Kenya, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a robust nationwide enforcement crackdown ahead of the Easter holidays, which begin on Friday, April 3, 2026.

In a press statement on Thursday, April 2, NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa urged all motorists to adopt a culture of safety on the roads, as the agency intensifies efforts to reduce accidents during the busy festive period.

"Fellow motorists, as we come together to celebrate this Easter season, I implore every driver and passenger to prioritize safety on our roads," Kondiwa said. "Our operations, in close collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS), are designed to reduce fatal crashes and ensure a safer holiday for all."

This announcement follows a history of increased road traffic during the Easter period, where the volume of vehicles on Kenya's highways rises significantly, amplifying the risk of accidents. The NTSA's crackdown aims to directly target dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, drunk driving, and driver fatigue—issues that have repeatedly contributed to devastating accidents.

A New Level of Enforcement

To combat these risks, the NTSA has introduced a series of tactical measures to enforce road safety, including the deployment of speed cameras, the installation of sobriety checkpoints at strategic locations, and the presence of traffic enforcement officers along key routes. These officers will be on high alert to monitor driving behavior, check vehicles for safety compliance, and act swiftly in response to any violations.

Kondiwa emphasized that this crackdown is not just about enforcing the law—it’s about saving lives. "We are committed to ensuring that every motorist understands the importance of their actions on the road," he said. "Reckless driving habits like speeding, drunk driving, and fatigue must not be tolerated."

A Focus on Vehicle Safety

Equally important, the NTSA is taking a strong stance on vehicle maintenance. Unroadworthy vehicles, including those with mechanical defects such as faulty brakes, worn-out tires, and poor lighting, will be immediately impounded. "For vehicles that break down, we urge motorists to park safely off the road and place warning triangles a sufficient distance away," Kondiwa added.

The agency’s message is clear: compliance is non-negotiable. "We will not hesitate to seize vehicles that pose a danger to the driver, passengers, and other road users. It’s a matter of life and death," Kondiwa warned.

Educating and Empowering Drivers

While the crackdown may seem stringent, it is also an opportunity for public education. The NTSA is reminding drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid alcohol consumption before driving, and take frequent breaks during long journeys to prevent fatigue. In particular, the agency has stressed the importance of keeping alert, especially during the nighttime hours when driver fatigue and alcohol-related incidents spike.

"During these busy holidays, we all need to be extra cautious," Kondiwa concluded. "The safety of all Kenyans depends on each of us taking personal responsibility for our actions on the road."

The Bigger Picture: A Commitment to Road Safety

The intensified crackdown is not just a response to the increased traffic during the Easter season but is also part of a broader, ongoing commitment by the NTSA to improve road safety year-round. With the stakes so high, every effort, from traffic enforcement to public education, is crucial in reducing Kenya’s road accident rates, which continue to claim hundreds of lives each year.

As the country gears up for the Easter break, the NTSA’s crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk on the roads and the collective responsibility each of us bears to keep them safe. With every speed limit sign, sobriety checkpoint, and vehicle inspection, the NTSA is sending a powerful message: safety isn’t just a priority—it’s an imperative.

As holidaymakers hit the road, one thing is certain: the NTSA’s crackdown means a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe driving. This Easter, the price of carelessness is simply too high—stay safe, or face the consequences.
