Official team clarifies donation channels as fake link spreads online, highlighting the risks of digital fraud during Kenya’s presidential campaign season.

As Kenya gears up for the 2027 elections, scammers have set their sights on unsuspecting citizens, targeting supporters of former Chief Justice David Maraga with a fraudulent online fundraiser.

Maraga’s campaign team moved quickly to alert the public, confirming to Kenyans that only one official donation page exists. Any other circulating links are not sanctioned by the campaign.

“Hello, it is as I just tweeted. We have other fake donation links which are not recognised by the campaign. The official donation link is donations.davidmaraga.com, which can be found on our official campaign website www.davidmaraga.com,” the team stated.

In a season where digital deception runs rampant, Maraga’s campaign reminds Kenyans that safeguarding democracy starts with safeguarding where you click.

Reports indicate that this is not the first attempt to mislead supporters. Since Maraga launched his presidential bid in June last year, multiple fraudulent donation links have surfaced, diverting contributions intended for the grassroots campaign.

Spotting the Real From the Fake

A famous blog conducted a detailed comparison between the authentic and counterfeit sites. Key differences were immediately apparent:

  • Official page: Features Maraga’s portrait, manifesto, and campaign messaging. Current fundraising totals stand at KSh7,926,700 from 2,328 donations.
  • Fake page: Redirects directly to a donation portal on a free hosting platform (replit.app) and shows just KSh971,505 from 25 contributors.

Maraga himself publicly celebrated the milestone on March 29, acknowledging ordinary Kenyans’ contributions as the backbone of his campaign.

“My fellow Kenyans, thank you. From Mombasa to Moyale. Lodwar to Lokichang. Nairobi to Namanga, ordinary Kenyans have contributed KES 7,836,150 to our campaign. Not from the powerful. Not from the well-connected. From you,” Maraga said.

The domain distinction further confirms the fraudulent nature of the fake site. Maraga’s official fundraiser uses a .COM domain, whereas the impostor runs on a free coding platform, making it easy to spot for tech-savvy users but potentially dangerous for less cautious contributors.

Campaign Funding With a Purpose

In July 2025, Maraga pledged to rely on contributions from ordinary Kenyans, rejecting the traditional reliance on wealthy or politically connected donors. This grassroots approach underpins his vision for accountable governance.

Funds raised will support the Ukatiba Caravan, a nationwide civic education initiative aimed at increasing voter registration, particularly among young people, a demographic historically marked by voter apathy.

Maraga’s campaign team urges all supporters to double-check donation links and rely exclusively on official channels to ensure their contributions are safely directed toward Kenya’s democratic process.
