A storm of speculation surrounding the brutal assault on Godfrey Osotsi has been forcefully quashed by allies, who now accuse shadowy political actors of orchestrating both the attack—and the narrative that followed.

Leaders aligned to the Linda Mwananchi faction have dismissed claims that the Vihiga senator was in the company of a married woman at the time of the incident in Kisumu, branding the allegations as a deliberate smear campaign designed to deflect from what they insist was a calculated, politically motivated assault.

Rumour vs Reality

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, social media platforms lit up with sensational claims of a love triangle, with bloggers alleging that the senator had been caught in a compromising situation.

But Edwin Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi faction, set the record straight: Osotsi had been meeting a female member of his Senate staff when the assailants struck.

“There are those attempting to push a cheap narrative,” added Antoney Kibagendi, accusing unnamed bloggers of recycling familiar tactics used to obscure the truth in high-profile cases. “We know who the thugs were—and who sent them.”

Details emerging from those close to the senator paint a chilling picture of premeditation.

Earlier that morning, Osotsi had made a routine stop at Acacia Mall before briefly interacting with a group of youths—an encounter described as friendly. He later proceeded to a restaurant to meet staff, even sending his bodyguard on an errand moments before the ambush.

It was then, according to CCTV footage, that more than a dozen assailants stormed in, unleashing a barrage of blows on the unarmed legislator.

The precision of the attack—and the timing—has only deepened suspicions among his allies.

Hospital Vigil and Political Outrage

Hours later, a stream of political leaders gathered at Karen Hospital, where Osotsi had been airlifted for treatment. Though in visible pain, doctors confirmed he was in stable condition pending further scans to assess head injuries.

Among those who received him at Wilson Airport were Stewart Madzayo, Raphael Tuju, and Eugene Wamalwa, alongside several MPs who demanded swift arrests.

“The same speed used in other arrests must now apply here,” said Clive Gisairo, reflecting growing impatience with law enforcement.

While condemning the incident, Sifuna was careful to shield Kisumu residents from blame, calling the attack an isolated act carried out by “hired thugs” rather than a reflection of the city’s character.

Still, the episode has reignited fears over the rise of organised political gangs and the weaponisation of misinformation.

Leaders are now calling on the Interior Ministry to address what they describe as an emerging threat to democratic stability.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since taken over the case, condemning the assault and confirming that detectives are actively pursuing critical leads.
